Community Mourns Slain Norcross High Student: MyFoxATLANTA.com

Friends, family and classmates remembered a high school student who was slain during a home invasion. Norcross police arrested six people in connection with the death of Norcross High School student Nicholas Jackson during a home invasion Thursday night.

Chief Warren Summers of the Norcross Police Department says Anthony Bernard Lumpkin, age 32; Rico Dehaven West, age 19; Eddie Lewis Green, age 46; Jason Dozier, age 36; Michael Davis, age 23; and Timothy Lamar Johnson, age 34, are facing charges of Felony Murder and Burglary in connection with Jackson's death. Norcross Police say the men stormed the Jackson family house on Autry Street and shot the honor student in the heart. Police have not determined a motive in the death. "Clearly, some sort of theft was a motive to go into the house but we're not certain what, if anything was taken from the house," said Norcross Police Chief Warren Summers.

"They just broke in and went straight to his room and he was there," said Nikia Jackson, Nicholas' sister. Nikia was upstairs. Nicholas' father tells FOX 5 the Norcross High student was in his basement bedroom when the gunmen opened fire, shooting him six times through the door --hitting the young man in the heart. "I heard a lot of banging and I thought he was downstairs bouncing a basketball because he always does that. And I didn't think anyything of it," said Jackson.

When the sister went downstairs to check out what was going on, she says she saw a van speed away from the home. "I knew something was wrong. I ran down. I called my grandma. She told me to call 911. I called 911 and started doing CPR." Unfortunately Jackson didn't make it. Those who knew Jackson said they are having a hard time dealing with his sudden loss. "Just pray for us," said Nikia Jackson.

Police used the sister's description of the get away car to stop a van about a mile away near Jimmy Carter Boulevard. "A couple individuals in the van apparently tried to run. They were apprehended along with other individuals in the van," said Chief Warren Summers of the Norcross Police Department. FOX 5 cameras were there as several men were taken in for questioning. Detectives say they're confident they have the people responsible for the crime.

Nicholas Jackson was a promising student with a bright future ahead, according to the friends, family and educators. "Nicholas was a straight A student at Hopewell. In fact, he was the valedictorian of his eighth grade class," said Dr. Burrell Pope, the former principal of Hopewell Christian Academy. "He was a mentor here at the school. He was one of the leaders. All the kids from K-5 looked up to him. This is a great loss for, not just Hopewell Christian Academy, but the entire community."

Nicholas Jackson was a ninth-grade student at Norcross High School. A moment of silence was held in his honor a basketball game there Friday night. "If you were sad, he would come and try to make your day. He was just such a bright person. I don't understand why somebody would do something like this to him," said Nakiyah Harris, the victim's friend. Norcross' police chief said the shooting was not gang-related. Funeral plans for Jackson have not been announced.

Don Cornelius, creator of the long-running TV dance show "Soul Train," shot himself to death Wednesday morning at his Los Angeles home, police said. He was 75.

Officers responding to a report of a shooting found Cornelius at his Mulholland Drive home at around 4 a.m., police said. He was pronounced dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at 4:56 a.m. at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter.

"Soul Train" began in 1970 in Chicago on WCIU-TV as a local program and aired nationally from 1971 to 2006.

It introduced television audiences to such legendary artists as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Barry White and brought the best R&B, soul and later hip-hop acts to TV and had teenagers dance to them. It was one of the first shows to showcase African-Americans prominently, although the dance group was racially mixed. Cornelius was the first host and executive producer.

"There was not programming that targeted any particular ethnicity," he said in 2006, then added: "I'm trying to use euphemisms here, trying to avoid saying there was no television for black folks, which they knew was for them."

Cornelius, who was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 1995 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, said in 2006 he remained grateful to the musicians who made "Soul Train" the destination for the best and latest in black music.

"I figured as long as the music stayed hot and important and good, that there would always be a reason for 'Soul Train,'" Cornelius said.

The series spawned a franchise that includes the Soul Train Music Awards, the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards and the Soul Train Christmas Starfest.

Cornelius stepped down as "Soul Train" host in 1993.

In his later years, Cornelius had a troubled marriage. In 2009, he was sentenced to three years' probation after pleading no contest to misdemeanor spousal battery. In his divorce case that year, he also mentioned having significant health issues.

Police were called to Dekaney High School in northwest Harris County Friday after a brawl broke out in the cafeteria. Spring ISD officials said the fight started between four students. But cell phone video obtained by KHOU 11 News clearly shows a chaotic scene with a lot more than four students involved. Students who were in the lunchroom at the time said it was more like a riot.

"All these people came and just started hitting everybody," said Maya Rodriguez, a student. "After a while, I got hit and everybody just started fighting. So I hit back..." Students were jumping on tables, yelling and throwing things. "They had a riot at B lunch and it got outrageous," said Everiel Johnson, a student. "They started throwing milk. Innocent people were getting hit for no reason."

Dekaney's principal said she has seen enough. "We have to have immediate solutions. We know that. We know that we have to do something quickly," Delic Loyde said. Dekaney students and parents say they're fed up with the problems at the school and they don't think it's safe. "We feel like this is getting out of control, way out of control," said one mom who didn't want to show her face. "And we just don't know, as parents, what to do or who to talk to."

The woman said her son was jumped in a Dekaney hallway on Thursday. She said another student had to be sent to the hospital, so she didn't let her son go to school on Friday. "I feel like we're gonna lose a life if somebody doesn't do something to prevent these fights that are going on every day," she said. Cell phone videos of several small-scale riots at Dekaney were posted to the Internet last year.
